Groovy Gecko today completed work on a major wildlife broadcast project commissioned by Channel 4 and produced by Tigress Productions (an Endemol Company), from the heart of South Luangwa Valley in Zambia. A new high-tech natural history event, Hippo: The Wild Feast presents the most comprehensive illustration to date of nature's food chain in action. The live streaming broadcast investigated how and where the millions of calories from the carcass of a huge hippo would be consumed. Groovy Gecko provided the satellite downlink services at its facility in London, streaming live for 21 hours a day for 7 days to the web and to IOS devices. In addition, the live feed was supplied directly into Channel 4’s schedule at 7:55 every night made this a logistically difficult challenge in one of the world’s harshest environments with the ground temperature reaching 61C. Groovy Gecko also provided internet connectivity in the bush to enable a series of experts to tweet and explain interesting activity of the entire ecological system including predators, scavengers, birds and insects. Groovy Gecko’s unique approach not only allowed for flawless delivery of the stream and the broadcast material but also utilised Channel Logger, a new technical solution for archiving broadcast quality content and making it remotely available via a secure internet login. Editors were able to view, select and download broadcast quality footage using an online interface. This ensured that the time to edit was greatly reduced as material was quickly available anywhere. Craig Moehl, Managing Director, Groovy Gecko commented: “The client really appreciated one company providing a complete end to end solution thereby minimising risk and cost. The success of this pioneering project paves the way for all broadcasters to embrace the concept of augmenting broadcast material with live webcasting via companion content sites.” The project culminates in a 90-minute documentary to be aired tonight on Channel 4 at 9pm, featuring presenter Mark Evans.
