An increase in the consumption of streaming media files has prompted an explosion in the growth of online data transfers over the last year, it has been revealed.
Data compiled by ABI Research showed that annual data traffic has reached 8,000 petabytes per year at present, with this figure set to double to 16,000 petabytes per annum by 2016. The study predicted a 56 per cent growth in data volumes in 2012, followed by an increase of 58 per cent in the following year, with increases slightly down thereafter. However, streaming video is seen as a massively important area in terms of growth, with consumers utilising more data each year to watch their favourite programmes, films and content online. Meanwhile, the Media Post Vid Blog recently reported that 85 per cent of US media sites now incorporate steaming video into their daily content. "We have said it before in these pages; video is the new text and the web is a primary accelerant of that trend," the blog stated. Posted by Emma Johnson ![]() |
