Netflix has been proclaimed as King of the Internet in the US for its use of bandwidth in the country, it has been revealed.
The streaming video provider has been found to use the most bandwidth out of any company, accounting for 29.7 per cent of all downloaded information in any given hour in North America. "If it wasn't Netflix, it would have been Amazon. And if it wasn't Amazon it would have been Google," commented Colin Gillis, senior technology analyst with BGC Partners in New York. As a result, the latest global internet phenomena report released by Sandvine Corp placed Netflix above even peer-to-peer filesharing hosts, such as BitTorrent. Meanwhile, the Washington Post recently reported that the number of subscribers to Netflix's services in the US topped 23.6 million in the first quarter of 2011. The company has now tied in first place with Comcast as the biggest streaming video provider in the country, with 3.6 million new subscribers in the first three months of the year.
