The government has announced its latest batch of superfast broadband areas that are to be upgraded across the UK, in news which could be of interest to those looking for faster rates for streaming media.
Wiltshire, Norfolk, Devon and Somerset are to benefit from funding of £50 million towards the improvement of broadband services as part of the government's £530 million investment in the Broadband Delivery UK office. Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt said: "This is great news for people in Wiltshire, Norfolk and Devon & Somerset, and other councils will soon have the chance to bid for a nationwide funding programme." He added that it is important that people in rural areas continue to see improvements in their service and for them to have comparable speeds to those who live in urban communities. Edd Dawson, editor of broadband.co.uk, recently argued that broadband is now an essential service for many Brits and it is perceived in the same way as utilities like gas and electric.
