Streaming media service providers may be interested to learn that World IPv6 Day took place this Wednesday (June 8th).
The international event was designed as the first global testing of the new IPv6 infrastructure, as developers have warned for a while now that IPv4 addresses are running out. Qing Li, chief scientist and senior technologist at Blue Coat Systems, said supporting the changeover from IPv4 to IPv6 is crucial if the web is to continue to flourish, with World IPv6 Day a significant milestone in this process. He commented: "Since IPv4 and IPv6 will coexist for many years, supporting both users in both environments will be crucial." Websites and internet service providers around the world joined companies including Facebook, Google, Yahoo!, Akamai, Limelight Networks and many more to take part in the first global-scale trial of the new internet protocol, which was organised by the Internet Society.
