BT Openreach has announced it will be undertaking massive investment in updating broadband services across the UK over the coming years, a development that could be highly beneficial for streaming media providers.
In total, the company has set out plans to upgrade 66 telephone exchanges by the end of 2012, offering speeds of up to 40 Mbps in the majority of areas. Liv Garfield, chief executive officer for BT Openreach, said: "This is the largest single commercial investment in fibre-based broadband infrastructure ever undertaken in the UK and is one of the biggest civil engineering projects running in the country at this time." Clodagh Murphy, director of internet services provider Eclipse Internet, recently noted that those living in rural areas of the UK could benefit considerably through investment in next-generation broadband services. She noted that this will have a positive impact on the economy as a whole, as access to superfast broadband will be a boon to both residents and businesses in these areas.
