A bill banning streaming video downloads via sites that profit from copyrighted material has been passed in the US.
The Senate Judiciary Committee has now made it an offence for individuals to download copyrighted content in this manner, with sentences of up to five years in prison for individuals who are found to have downloaded more than ten items of copyrighted material in a 180-day period. "This isn't about individuals or families streaming movies at home," Amy Klobuchar, a sponsor of the bill, told Bloomberg. "It's about criminals streaming thousands of dollars worth of stolen digital content and profiting from it." Meanwhile, a recent report published by Cisco forecast that the streaming video sector will help to quadruple the amount of data transferred via the internet over the next four years. It claimed that 242.4 exabytes of information were sent via the web in 2010, but this will likely rise to 965.5 exabytes by 2015. Posted by Emma Johnson ![]() |
