The UK has been ranked fifth for the number of subscribers to fixed broadband services, meaning access to streaming video and other online activities are generally better in the UK than elsewhere.
According to statistics published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the countries that came out ahead of the UK were the US, Japan, Germany and France. Overall, the OECD revealed that the global fixed broadband sector grew by six per cent year on year, while wireless broadband services increased at a greater rate of ten per cent. Meanwhile, Dr Charles Trotman, head of rural business development for the Country Land and Business Association, noted rural areas of the UK must not be left behind when it comes to the rollout of new superfast broadband services. He argued that areas that are not supplied with broadband services will find it difficult to compete with more urban areas that have better internet provisions in terms of attracting businesses and helping them to flourish.
