Microsoft has announced it is engaged in research to exploit the opportunities afforded by 'white space' in boosting mobile broadband networks around the world.
The work could see streaming media providers being able to transmit content in the spaces in the spectrum that are presently not used between TV channels, ensuring use of the high-high frequency (UHF) bandwidth is optimised in the future. In addition, the plan has the added bonus that UHF is better able to travel through walls and buildings than lower bandwidths, meaning broadband access and signal strength could be improved significantly. "Spectrum is a finite natural resource. We can't make more and we must use it efficiently and wisely," said Dan Reed, Microsoft's vice president of technology policy and strategy. Elsewhere, statistics published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) recently showed that the UK currently lies fifth in terms of the number of subscribers to fixed-line broadband services out of the 32 OECD countries. The countries that came out ahead of the UK in the study were the US, Japan, Germany and France. Posted by Emma Johnson ![]() |
