Streaming video content provider Netflix is facing a legal challenge from a group of deaf activists who are claiming the site is failing to meet the needs of the disabled community in the US.
According to the National Association of the Deaf, Netflix's Watch Instantly content fails to offer closed captioning on the majority of its downloads, meaning the company could be in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. "Deaf and hard-of-hearing activists are working together to directly engage Netflix through a robust advocacy and social media campaign, all while a lawsuit hangs over the company’s head," commented activist Clara Long of Change.org. Elsewhere, the online streaming video market could also be set to see a new battle of the providers, with Comcast looking to topple Netflix as the top provider of streaming content in the US. Comcast recently launched its new Xcalibur product that aims to take the mantle as the most popular option for streaming media consumers. Posted by Kevin Smith ![]() |
