The 2011 H1 Mobile Trends Report from Allot has highlighted the fact that streaming video provider YouTube remains the top destination for mobile users looking to watch online content.
Overall, the figures showed the site received 52 per cent of mobile streaming video usage in the first half of the year and accounted for 22 per cent of all bandwidth used. Meanwhile, Skype continued to dominate in the Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) sector, accounting for 82 per cent of VoIP usage, although its share did drop slightly following the entry into the market of new players like Viber. The figures were compiled from a global user base of 250 million individuals and showed that while mobile file sharing took a hit over the last six months, the uptake of video streaming applications and content grew considerably. Meanwhile, Chris Marling, editor of Broadband Genie, recently warned the UK is falling behind in the rollout of mobile broadband services, with delivery of a superfast mobile broadband network considerably slower in the UK than it has been in many other countries.
