Research In Motion (RIM) will soon unveil a streaming audio service for its BlackBerry smartphones, according to reports.
Insider sources have indicated that the Canadian firm is currently in talks with several major record labels over the venture, which could be launched in a test version within the next few weeks. The service has been interpreted as RIM's latest attempt to move the BlackBerry brand away from its business-only image and foster a wider appeal among consumers, particularly as it faces growing competition from Apple and Google's Android operating system. Over the last few years, the company has used the likes of U2 and American DJ and producer Diplo to advertise BlackBerry devices. If the rumours are correct, the music streaming platform will be integrated with BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), the popular instant messaging service that has become a standout feature of RIM's phones. According to the company, approximately 45 million people interact via BBM and 70 per cent use the service daily. Posted by Thomas Price ![]() |
