Facebook will put an end to the rumours by finally launching its streaming audio service later this month, according to a report.
Mashable said the new media platform, which is expected to be unveiled at Facebook's developer conference in San Francisco on September 22nd, will enable users to listen to music from within the social networking site. Two sources with inside knowledge told the publication that Facebook will not directly host or stream any media itself, but instead integrate content provided by a number of external sources. Spotify, MOG and Rdio are rumoured to be among the first launch partners for the platform, which could be opened up to other third-party developers at a later date. Founder Mark Zuckerberg is keen on increasing the amount of time Facebook's 750 million users spend on the site. The music service, which is expected to be called Facebook Vibes, is seen as one way to achieve this goal. An anonymous source told Reuters: "They are working on a platform for music where the goal is to create a connective tissue for fans." Posted by Kevin Smith ![]() |
