Rdio has announced it is offering free content to users for a limited time.
Currently available in the US, the San Francisco-based business is targeting rivals Spotify and Pandora in the streaming music sector, with future plans for expansion into Europe currently in the pipeline, but no dates have yet been confirmed for a UK launch. "Free music with no ads is very distinct from what everyone else is doing," Drew Larner, chief executive officer of Rdio, said. "We know when people use Rdio they get hooked. That's the bet we are making." The company's aim is to convert free users into monthly subscribers, with those who receive free content having a limited download capacity each month, while those who pay have unlimited access to the site's song library of more than 12 million titles. Meanwhile, streaming audio provider Rhapsody has this week announced the acquisition of Rdio rival Napster, as it aims to strengthen its position in the US marketplace. Posted by Thomas Price ![]() |
