New research has indicated that streaming media is fast replacing traditional forms of home entertainment in the UK.
Analysts at Verdict Research said free access to streaming services such as YouTube, Spotify and BBC iPlayer has meant customers are placing less value on owning films, music and video games. According to the report, the value of the British home entertainment market has fallen from £7.7 billion in 2008 to an estimated £6.1 billon this year. Carly Syme, retail analyst at Verdict Research, suggested that consumer attitudes towards streaming media services have changed in recent years. "People will talk openly about downloading or streaming products without any worries of it being against the law," she commented. Ms Syme added that the "weak economic climate" has contributed to this trend, as streaming services often represent a more affordable option for budget-conscious consumers. A recent report from Sandvine said the world has now entered the "post-PC era", with the majority of entertainment data traffic heading to game consoles, set-top boxes, smart TVs and mobile devices.
