The rising popularity of streaming video is set to drive up usage of mobile data transmissions in the coming years, according to a new study.
A traffic and market data report collated by Ericsson has revealed that a tenfold increase in worldwide mobile data traffic is expected to take place between now and 2016. Video services were cited as the main cause for this expected rise, with mobile broadband subscriptions likely to hit five billion by 2016, up from around 900 million in 2011. The upsurge in smartphone purchases has also been recognised as a major contributing factor, with traffic generated by these devices set to match that of mobile PCs within five years. Johan Wibergh, head of Ericsson Business Unit Networks, said: "This report offers snapshots that, together, show how a growing number of people and businesses benefit from mobility, broadband and the cloud." This comes after a Sandvine report last month suggested that streaming media habits are moving away from the PC, with consoles, smartphones and internet-ready TVs becoming more popular.
