US streaming media service Roku is to be rolled out in the UK and other international territories next year.
The company has announced plans to begin selling Roku streaming players to consumers in Britain and Canada in early 2012 and is expanding its open platform to support region-specific channels. Providing internet-delivered video, music and games, Roku was responsible for introducing the first Netflix streaming player in 2008 and currently offers more than 350 channels in the US. Broadcasters can choose to deliver their content for free, via subscription or with advertising support, while current partners include the likes of Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus and Pandora. Anthony Wood, Roku's founder and chief executive officer, said: "We're looking forward to kicking off 2012 by expanding to Europe and Canada and providing consumers abroad with the best in streaming entertainment - a natural evolution for Roku." This comes as US streaming giant Netflix also prepares to make its UK debut next year, with partners including Lionsgate and Miramax. Posted by Kevin Smith ![]() |
