Major high street retailer HMV is entering into the digital marketplace with the launch of a streaming video service in partnership with FilmFlex.
The new hmvon-demand service has been introduced this week and will offer titles from more than 30 distributors, with a major marketing push planned for next year. With a catalogue including blockbusters such as the Harry Potter and X-Men films, the new online offering will help the brand to offset declines in its bricks-and-mortar business, while putting in competition with services such as LOVEFiLM and Netflix. It will initially be available for use via PC owners, with plans in the works to expand on to other digital devices, while download and cloud-based purchasing models will also be introduced to complement the basic streaming service. HMV's director of ecommerce and marketing Mark Hodkinson said: "With a growing number of consumers now incorporating video-on-demand into their viewing and purchasing habits, the time is right to include a digital service into our own offer." Service partner FilmFlex already provides one of the most successful movies-on-demand offerings in Europe, recording more than 60 million sales since its launch in 2005. Posted by Kevin Smith ![]() |
