The BBC iPlayer has been credited by LOVEFiLM with helping to make streaming media a mainstream concept in the UK.
According to Simon Morris, chief marketing officer (CMO) of the Amazon-owned company, the public broadcaster's online streaming service has helped to normalise the idea of catch-up TV, to the benefit of the market as a whole. "The service went a long way to explaining to middle England that streaming content was normal," he told TechRadar. Thanks to this change in consumer behaviour, Mr Morris states that the general public no longer has the same confusion over the pros and cons of streaming compared to ownership, allowing services such as LOVEFiLM to gain a firm foothold. According to the most recent usage figures from the BBC, iPlayer requests for on-demand TV and radio content stood at 153 million in September 2011. Demand from newer devices continues to grow, with tablet usage hitting an all-time high during the month. Posted by Geoff Phillips ![]() |
