Apple has taken a lead in the streaming set top box market in the last year, claiming a market share of just under a third, according to a new report.
Data from Strategy Analytics has revealed that the Apple TV device now commands a 32 per cent share of the burgeoning market, accounting for four million of the almost 12 million internet TV devices sold worldwide last year. According to the report, Apple's product is succeeding due to its affordable price point, while Apple TV owners are also spending more money on streamed movie and TV content on average. The statistics also showed that the internet TV sector as a whole is slowly gaining traction, with eight per cent of US households and seven per cent of European homes now owning the devices. Jia Wu, senior analyst at the connected home devices service for StrategyAnalytics, said: "As Apple prepares for its expected launch of smart TVs in 2012, rival platforms must accelerate their development plans to keep Apple from running away with the connected TV business." This comes after an NPD In-Stat report earlier this month suggested that the growing internet TV market will drive a twofold increase in online video revenues by 2015. Posted by Geoff Phillips ![]() |
