Online video viewership figures in October 2011 surpassed the 200 billion mark, driven primarily by the success of Google-owned streaming services.
Data from the comScore Video Metrix shows that nearly 1.2 billion people aged 15 and older watched 201.4 billion videos online worldwide during the month, with 88.3 billion of these views accounted for by Google sites such as YouTube. The UK came third behind Canada and the US in the rankings of the most video views per person, with 268.6 videos per viewer, while Turkey, Canada and Chile were the markets with the highest proportion of streaming users among the web population. Aside from Google sites, other leading content portals for online video included Vevo and Facebook, as well as the Chinese site Youku and Japan's Dwango. Dan Piech, comScore product manager for video, said: "As global broadband connectivity continues to rise, online video viewing has taken off in a big way and has become a fully integrated component of the digital content experience." This comes after a Futuresource Consulting report last month predicted that annual online video views will hit 770 billion in the UK, US, France and Germany alone this year.
