Netflix is to provide BBC TV content via its streaming media service when it launches in the UK next year.
BBC Worldwide has signed a digital licensing deal to bring older series of popular shows such as Doctor Who, Top Gear, Little Britain, Spooks and Fawlty Towers to Netflix subscribers. Members will be able to stream BBC content to compatible devices such as computers, tablets, connected TVs, games consoles and mobile devices when Netflix makes its UK debut early in 2012. Steve Macallister, president and managing director for sales and distribution at BBC Worldwide, noted that online TV viewing has proven particularly popular in the UK, thanks in large part to the availability of streaming BBC content. Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos added: "BBC shows are a big favourite of our over 20 million streaming members in the US, Canada and Latin America." Content deals with Miramax and Lionsgate have also been negotiated by Netflix for its UK debut, while it was also reported last month that talks with ITV have been held. Posted by Thomas Price ![]() |
