Streaming media service Netflix has made its debut in the UK this week, as the company looks to replicate the success of its US business in Britain.
The subscription-based entertainment service is offering UK users a package of unlimited content for £5.99 per month and €6.99 in Ireland, with a one-month free trial offer also available initially. For its UK launch, the company has signed distribution deals with partners such as the BBC, Disney, Lionsgate, ITV, Sony and Twentieth Century Fox, with mainstream US films to be joined by British shows like Top Gear and The Only Way is Essex. Content will be viewable across a wide range of devices, including PCs and Macs, iOS and Android phones and tablets, various smart TV brands and the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii games consoles. Reed Hastings, co-founder and chief executive officer of Netflix, said: "We are starting 2012 in the best possible way: by giving consumers in the UK and Ireland an amazing entertainment experience." Netflix is the leading movie streaming service in the US, with users accessing more than two billion hours of content in the fourth quarter of 2011. Posted by Kevin Smith ![]() |
