Netflix chief executive officer Reed Hastings has expressed confidence that the streaming service can rival traditional broadcast services such as Sky.
With the US web-based entertainment provider having made its debut in the UK this month, Mr Hastings expressed confidence that streaming services will gradually gain market share from linear broadcasts in future. "In 20 years from now we will all be able to click and watch TV. Broadcast TV is like the landline of 20 years ago. I think of us as like mobile," he explained. The business leader noted that Netflix's service is cheaper than Sky and offers a wide range of content, while conceding that Sky has an entrenched position and the support of major content providers. He also said Netflix could gain an "edge" from its expertise in web-based platforms, as well as its availability on devices that are not supported by Sky, such as games consoles. This comes after Mr Hastings told the Telegraph this week that he believes Netflix will also succeed in battling established UK player LOVEFiLM for market share, due to its superior usability.
