Microsoft could be set to launch a new streaming set-top device that incorporates a Kinect motion-based interface, according to a report.
Online news source The Daily has stated that the technology company originally intended to launch the device in early 2012 but has now pushed the planned release date back. Offering wi-fi connectivity out of the box, it will be a multipurpose entertainment device offering streaming services such as Zune, Netflix and ESPN, as well as support for casual titles like Fruit Ninja Kinect. Physically, the device will resemble the current Kinect sensor for Xbox 360, featuring a single cable for HDMI, power and USB connections, as well as possible coaxial or optical out connections for audio. Users will be able to interact with interfaces using gestures or voice-based commands, while the Windows Phone Xbox Companion app can also be used. This tallies with a Digital Foundry report from November 2011 which suggested that Microsoft is planning to release two separate hardware models for its next console, with a simple set-top box unit accompanied by a fully-featured gaming model.
