A record number of users have utilised the BBC iPlayer to access streaming on-demand TV and radio content in 2011.
Latest figures from the public broadcaster reveal that 1.94 billion requests for programmes were received by iPlayer last year, a new record for the catch-up service. While home computers still account for two-thirds of the usage statistics, December 2011 was accompanied by a spike in requests from devices such as internet TVs, smartphones and tablets. This coincided with the launch of the official iPlayer iPhone application, which allows users to stream content to their smartphones via wi-fi and 3G connections. The week between December 26th 2011 and January 2nd 2012 also rated as the busiest week in the iPlayer's history, with TV requests hitting 29.7 million, while popular drama Sherlock achieved a daily record for a single programme with 623,000 views. Daniel Danker, general manager for programmes and on-demand services at the BBC, said: "Having established itself as a must-have app for smartphone users and the gold standard for TV on the go, we see huge potential for BBC iPlayer on the living room set in 2012."
