Takeup and awareness of streaming media services in the UK are on the increase, according to new industry research from KPMG.
The professional services group's latest Media & Entertainment Barometer shows that 64 per cent of British consumers are now willing to pay to stream films online, compared to 60 per cent in March 2011. Interest in streaming TV content was also shown to be on the rise, with the BBC's iPlayer catch-up service shown to be the offering with the highest level of awareness in the UK. KPMG's report also suggests that the growing ownership of smartphones and tablets, is also helping to drive interest in streaming services. David Elms, head of media at KPMG, said: "Judging by our survey it seems that new entrants into the UK market have got their timing right. The foundations for online streaming services to be successful appear to be set." This comes after figures from the BBC last week showed that iPlayer usage levels hit record heights in 2011.
