Amazon could be set to launch a standalone subscription-based streaming media service, according to a new report.
The internet retail giant is seeking to expand its online media presence in the US, building on its established Amazon Instant Video offering, which is part of its Amazon Prime unlimited shipping service. Industry sources have informed the New York Post that Jeff Bezos and other Amazon executives are considering the possibility of a new service that would compete with the likes of Netflix. This would make contractual discussions with content providers easier to conduct, following on from deals signed with CBS and Fox over the last 12 months. Paul Verna, senior analyst at eMarketer, told the publication: "Amazon is aggressively pursuing the same content strategy as Netflix and is spending a lot upfront to try to secure exclusivity. They won't always get it, but they need to differentiate themselves." In the UK, Amazon competes directly with Netflix in the streaming media sector through its subsidiary LOVEFiLM, which it took full control over in January 2011. Posted by Kevin Smith ![]() |
