Streaming media services could be set to pose a growing threat to traditional broadcast television following the introduction of new original programmes.
James McQuivey, an analyst at Forrester Research, told the Associated Press that he believes the standard TV market is "ready to unravel" as providers such as Netflix and Hulu take their first steps into delivering newly commissioned shows. Netflix will air its first original scripted show Lilyhammer in the US in February 2012, which will be followed by the drama series House of Cards and exclusive new episodes of the acclaimed comedy Arrested Development. At the same time, Hulu is preparing to introduce the political mockumentary Battleground in the next month, while Yahoo! will soon launch an animated series called Electric City. The streaming providers have allied with Hollywood names such as David Fincher, Kevin Spacey, Mark Webb and Tom Hanks to create this content, with Mr McQuivey saying this will help produce content that can legitimately rival that of established networks. He explained: "The new content won't be as good as what you watch Thursday nights from 9 to 10 pm., but it's going to get closer to that quality." Posted by Kevin Smith ![]() |
