Satellite broadcaster Sky has announced plans to launch a new internet TV service this year, offering streaming access to film and TV content.
To be launched in the first half of the year, the service will be aimed at people who do not currently subscribe to pay TV services and will aim to offer instant and simple on-demand access to a wide range of material. Initially, this will encompass a selection of several hundred films from Sky Movies, with sports and entertainment content to be rolled out at a later date, while the service will be compatible with PCs, Macs, laptops, tablets, mobile devices, games consoles and connected TVs. Sky will be aiming to offer a wide range of pricing options for the streaming service, from monthly rates for unlimited access to one-off payments for single pieces of content. Jeremy Darroch, Sky's chief executive, said: "Bringing a distinctive, new choice to the marketplace will help us meet the needs and demands of an ever wider range of consumers." This new service will bring the company into closer competition with firms such as LOVEFiLM and the newly launched Netflix, which has identified Sky as its primary rival in the UK.
