The take-up of IPTV has steadily increased, but failed to live up to excited commentators predictions of world dominance. That is the conclusion drawn by Informa Telecoms & Media after its latest research into broadband TV. Television content delivery via the internet has spread to 19.96 million households worldwide. That means net additions over 2008 total seven million, which Informa Telecoms & Media principal, Julian Herbert, says is not amazing progress. However, he said that there were some areas in which IPTV subscriptions were thriving. Mr Herbert explained: "It is a fair observation that IPTV has not made the sort of inroads into broadband homes which operators might have expected, but it is wrong to declare that the concept is doomed to fail. "In markets where the bandwidth is available and the marketing and pricing are attractive, IPTV is attracting big volumes of new customers and helping operators to improve retention rates and increase fixed line ARPU." ![]() |
