Orange could be set to bid for the technology used for the video-on-demand service Project Kangaroo, it has been reported. Over the past few years, it is estimated that the partners in the project, including ITV, Channel 4 and the BBC, spent a collective £20 million developing the relevant technology. However, with the initiative now defunct, Project Kangaroo assets are up for sale, with Orange emerging as the latest company confirming an interest in acquiring them for what would represent a knock-down price. "We are examining this company and we see of course that it could be interesting," a spokesman for Orange's parent company, France Telecom, told the Guardian. "Nothing has been decided but we can confirm we are examining it." Should a deal go-ahead, it is expected that Orange would use the video-on-demand technology to boost its own service, Orange TV, with the telecoms company having recently announced plans to extend its set-top digital services across France. At the end of last month, ITV revealed that its investment in Project Kangaroo is likely to have reached around £12 million. ![]() |
