Music streaming service Spotify is considering a move which will allow audio content to be streamed on games consoles and other devices. The listening service is currently available online, but the firm has confirmed it is opening up its application programming interface (API) to allow developers to build software to support Spotify on a number of devices. Mobile phones and TV sets, as well as games consoles would be able to support the interface, Spotify co-founder Daniel Ek said. "This is the first step towards becoming more of a platform," he explained. "There are lots of services that have APIs, but this is different because it lets anyone build a Spotify client." The service currently has over a million users, with thousands of music fans flocking to the site each day to listen for content for free. Spotify signed a deal with music store 7digital last week to offer users the chance to purchase music downloads. Spotify will feature a link to 7digital where consumers can buy MP3 versions of the tracks streamed for free over the website. ![]() |
