The BBC has announced the launch of a new service enabling users to stream live programmes onto Wi-Fi connected mobile phones. Named BBC Live TV, the new initiative follows on from the ongoing success of the corporation's iPlayer, through which viewers are able to catch up on previously-shown shows over the internet. At present, the technology, which represents the first time the BBC has offered live streaming of audio and video programming to mobile phones, is available in beta test form. The official website explained: "There is no need to download or install anything -just click and go. "It's available on a wide range of Wi-Fi-enabled handsets. Over the coming months, we are hoping to make it available on even more handsets and over 3G networks." However, the service can only be accessed within the UK, with users required to hold a TV licence before they start streaming any content. Earlier this month, Broadband Choices reported that the growth of the iPlayer is likely to be a major driver behind the expected increase in online streaming over the next couple of years. ![]() |
