The BBC has confirmed that it is to start offering users the ability to stream its programmes in high definition (HD) though the iPlayer service. To date, the application has received in excess of 387 million streaming or downloading requests since its launch in Christmas 2007. Now, the broadcaster's head of digital media technology, Anthony Rose, has announced that the technology has reached a "new milestone", with a number of programmes to be offered in HD. These include popular shows such as Doctor Who and Dragons' Den, with many more set to follow, while users will also be able to customise the size of their viewing window in order to benefit from better streaming quality. "The new adaptive bitrate technology and speed diagnostics page help optimise the viewing experience, while the resizable window gives users flexibility to switch between different quality streams, hopefully leading to a more satisfying experience overall," Mr Rose explained. This follows on from the news that the BBC is rolling out its Live TV service, whereby viewers can stream live programmes onto Wi-Fi connected mobile phones. ![]() |
