YouTube has announced that it plans to offer full-length streaming video content to its users. The video hosting site said that it will work with a number of major television and movie companies including the BBC and Paramount Pictures to deliver the streaming content. Other movie studios such as CBS, MGM, Lionsgate and Starz have also signed up to provide YouTube with feature-length content in exchange for a share of advertising revenue. YouTube, which has been trying to boost revenues amid rising maintenance costs, hopes the new venture will prove to be profitable. As part of the new offering, YouTube will make more use of video advertising such as mid-stream adverts shown during the breaks of longer videos. Writing on the company's blog, YouTube's Shiva Rajamaran commented: "We look forward to expanding to other regions as soon as possible." Recent statistics from comScore reveal that the number of viewers who visited YouTube topped the 100 million mark for the first time in January this year. ![]() |
