Audio streaming is growing in popularity and is set to become "the next big thing", a new survey has found. A Jacobs Media poll found that the proportion of people who have never listened to streaming audio has dropped from 50 per cent to 34 per cent in four years. In addition, just under a third (30 per cent) of people said they have increased the amount of time spent listening to streaming audio at home, at work, while walking and in the car. A further four in ten (39 per cent) respondents said they stream at least once every week - up from 32 per cent over the past year. The survey found that those who listen to streaming audio the most prefer to tune into alternative stations and are typically owners of iPhones or the iPod touch. "The brands that consumers know and trust terrestrially are one and the same on computers and phones," commented Fred Jacobs, president of Jacobs Media. Martin Stiksel, co-founder of internet radio company Last.fm, recently told the Guardian that the firm has witnessed considerable growth this year because "music is like escapism in its purest form".
