The number of consumers who pay for mobile video services is set to grow substantially within the next five years, a new report predicts. A study by Pyramid Research reveals that the number of mobile video subscriptions will increase five-fold and surpass 534 million by 2014. Streaming, downloading, side-loading, data usage and mobile television broadcasting are also expected to experience developments, the report said. Derek Medlin, senior analyst at Pyramid Research and author of the report, said the number of people who will pay for mobile video subscriptions will account for 8.5 per cent of all subscriptions, which is up from the current level of 2.5 per cent. "The availability of improved devices and networks are contributing to a higher level of adoption and spending on mobile video services," he explained. "Pyramid believes that a substantial proportion of mobile net additions in the next five years will come from emerging markets, especially in Asia Pacific and will drive a 37 per cent growth in total mobile subscriptions from 2009 to 2014." The Mobile Marketing Association recently predicted that mobile marketing expenditure will grow by 26 per cent this year.
