The number of unique viewers watching online streaming video has increased within the last year, new figures show. According to Nielsen Online, the number of unique streaming video viewers topped 133,797 in May 2009, a 12.8 per cent increase from the same period last year. The total number of streams exceeded ten million - a 34.8 per cent increase since the same period last year and a 6.2 per cent rise since April. Nielsen's figures also showed that the number of streams per viewer stood at 75.1 - a year-on-year rise of 19.6 per cent. Meanwhile, the average time a viewer spent watching streaming videos in May was 188.7 minutes - a 48.9 per cent increase from the same period last year. YouTube was by far the most popular website with streaming video users, with over 95,000 unique viewers notching up more than six million streams in May. A recent survey by Practical eCommerce found that 34 per cent of online retailers believe online video will revolutionise the e-tail industry within the next five years. ![]() |
