A growing number of video gamers stream online video content to television through their consoles, a new survey shows. Research by In-Stat shows that almost a third (29 per cent) of 25 to 34-year-olds with game consoles use the devices to watch streaming video from the internet. The company predicts that by 2013, the revenue from web-to-TV streaming services will grow to $2.9 billion (£1.7 billion) in the US alone, with 10.7 million video game consoles being used to stream web content. The increasing popularity of web-to-TV streaming is being fuelled by a growth in demand for broadband services, which is also expected to rise significantly in the coming years. "Currently, web video is largely additive to traditional TV revenue streams," said Keith Nissen, analyst at In-Stat. "However, ultimately web video to the TV will force a complete restructuring of today’s video distribution ecosystem." Recently released figures from Nielsen Online reveal that the total number of online video streams increased by 34 per cent in May compared to the same period last year. ![]() |
