The number of streaming videos watched online in the UK is on a steady increase, new figures show. According to the comScore Video Metrix, the proportion of UK viewers who watched video content online in April 2009 grew by 47 per cent year-on-year, equating to 4.7 billion videos. During the same period, some 21.8 million UK web users watched a total of 971 million online display ads on multimedia sites. The most popular online video property in April was Google, which recorded 2.4 billion videos viewed - a 58 per cent rise compared to a year ago. Google's popularity was largely driven by video hosting website YouTube, which accounted for 99 per cent of all videos viewed on Google sites. Mike Read, senior vice-president and managing director of comScore Europe, said: "With nearly five billion videos viewed in the UK in April, online video is a powerful and growing vehicle for online advertising placement." Recent figures from Nielsen show that YouTube recorded more than six million streams in the US this May. ![]() |
