The BBC has announced a major new video-sharing deal with four British national newspaper companies. As part of the unprecedented agreement, the BBC will share its video news on the websites of Guardian News & Media, Daily Mail & General Trust, Telegraph Media Group and Independent News & Media. As well as sharing streaming video content, the BBC will also allow the companies' websites to benefit from its technological expertise. The content provided will cover politics, health, business, science and technology and will later be expanded to other UK-based news websites. BBC content will only be viewable in the UK and will be provided to the newspapers on the proviso that there will be no advertising. Mark Byford, BBC deputy director general and head of journalism, said: "We regard this initiative as a core part of the BBC working more effectively as a public service partner, with other media organisations utilising BBC news content." Earlier this year, Channel 4 announced plans to make its entire back catalogue of programme titles available to users free of charge.
