Music streaming site Spotify has expanded its reach to offer users streaming video content. The firm said its website will now feature video ads, which paves the way for original video content such as full-length programmes and TV clips with its flash-based player. Ads featured on the website will be relatively discreet for the time being - when users click on a banner ad, a video pops up. A spokesperson for the Swedish company told Paid Content UK: "As of now we're concentrating purely on providing the best music service possible, but of course the long-term potential to move into new areas is there." As part of its new foray into the video arena, Spotify has joined forces with Sony Pictures to promote the company's new film The Taking of Pelham 123. Earlier this year, Spotify announced a deal with classical music label Naxos, which gives users access to a considerable number of classical music recordings on the company's website.
