Holidaying Brits are getting a shock when they receive their phone bill after using internet services while abroad. Travellers who make use of mobile internet for services such as streaming music or checking their emails are being landed with large bills, according to online technology blog Gadgets and Gizmos. Research conducted by uswitch.com recently found that 66 per cent of mobile phone users risk high overseas charges just by switching their phone on. However, the study found that half of those polled had not contacted their mobile phone provider to establish the costs of using the internet on their mobile phones abroad or to ascertain roaming charges. Richard Sharp, founder of Gadgets and Gizmos said: "The main problems that we are seeing are related to data roaming and mobile internet. "People do not realise that their 3G handset will continue to be connected via 3G, when at home this is fine as more often than not data is in included in your contract, however whilst they are abroad 3G data usage incurs substantial charges." ![]() |
