The popularity of on demand streaming of BBC programmes through Playstation games consoles is evidence of the continued rise of digital television, says a social media expert. Tim Gibbons, founder of the Social Media Portal, said: "As media and entertainment becomes diverse in terms of content, delivery channels and accessibility, it is only natural that creators, broadcasters, technology providers and syndicators seek new platforms to reach audiences." During the first six months of this year, streaming media service BBC iPlayer provided a total of 344.5 million items to users across a variety of different platforms. Siim Vips, chief executive of the global software company Modera, said games consoles "offer users the ability to network with friends, family and other gamers", making television a communal experience. According to Mr Gibbons, Sony is to announce further additions to the Playstation network including US films and television programmes. ![]() |
