Online video viewing is set to grow significantly over the next few years, new research suggests. According to a study from Reportlinker.com and In-Stat, 90 per cent of households in the US will have access to broadband internet by 2012, with 94 per cent of these individuals watching online video. This figure is up form an estimated 77.8 per cent of broadband users who watched online streaming video in 2008. The report also predicts that by 2012, the online streaming video market will top $4.5 billion (£2.8 billion), increasing from $1.2 billion (£750 million) in 2007. According to the study, the popularity of online video is expected to encompass a wider group of people, due to the ageing of current online video viewers and also because of word-of-mouth recommendations. Online video's popularity will also be spurred on by the growth of in-home networks, the spread of services and support from the consumer electronic device markets. Sky News is the latest content provider to capitalise on the popularity of online videos, having recently launched a new 24-hour broadcast feed on its website.
