Fast broadband is essential for web users to enjoy streaming video content, an expert has suggested. Peter Bazalgette, non-executive director at digital video syndication company myvideorights.com, said because of the state of content in general, it is more important to have fast broadband than to have universal broadband. Speaking at the recent Westminster eForum and Media Forum keynote seminar the Future of Content Online, he stressed that the government needs to put more emphasis on fast broadband instead of prioritising universal fast-speed web access. "There is a conflict, in my opinion, between having fast broadband and having universal broadband," Mr Bazalgette said. "I don't believe we can have both at the same time at the same pace." He added that fast broadband is so important that it is likely to be an "economic stimulus". According to figures from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, the proportion of UK households with internet access rose to 77 per cent between 2008 and 2009. ![]() |
