Streaming media and augmented reality applications are expected to increase in popularity over the next few years.
According to a new report by Juniper Research, web users will be downloading around 400 million augmented reality applications by 2014. This growth in number of downloads is expected to generate around £449 million in revenue - up from less than £1.22 million in 2010, Juniper Research said. The report found that the proliferation of apps stores will lead to an increase in the number of augmented reality apps being made readily available to end-users. Dr Windsor Holden, author of the report, said: "Preloading an AR browser, or indeed any kind of AR-enabled app, onto the handset, greatly reduces time-to-content or thereby offers the opportunity to increase user familiarity with AR in practice." According to Gartner's latest report on the worldwide mobile phone market, worldwide mobile phone sales totalled 308.9 million units in the third quarter of 2009, a 0.1 percentage point increase from the same period in 2008. ![]() |
