The pan-media European Audiovisual Social Dialogue Committee has called for more stringent regulation of streaming media sites to cut down on incidents of illegal file sharing.
The committee said tougher piracy regulation and well as increased pressure on internet service providers would help combat unlawful activity over their networks. Alison Wenham, chairperson of the Association of Independent Music, said there also needs to be frameworks in place for blogs, as they too are increasingly flouting copyright laws. "A growing number of individuals pop links onto their blogs either as a form of flattery or as information exchange," she said. "But when a few thousand people do that then the scale of the problem is far more similar [to] a file sharing service, which is obviously a far more cynical attempt to avoid payment for copyrighted music." Ms Wenham conceded that the industry is still a long way away from a pan-European legal framework, as there is currently no copyright law at EU level. ![]() |
