Free online streaming video site Hulu is considering introducing a charge for consumers to access the portal's content, according to reports.
Under the new proposals, the streaming media site may segue into a subscription model and charge users to watch popular programmes such as 30 Rock and House. According to the Los Angeles Times, one plan being considered would allow users to watch five of the most recent episodes of a programme for free and but older shows would only be accessible for a subscription fee of $4.99 a month. Such a service would require Hulu to have at least 20 television series in order to appeal to viewers, the company said. The proposal is part of a broader industry-wide drive to monetise online content, as streaming media continues to grow in popularity. Plans to introduce subscription fees were first alluded to last year during an industry speech by Jonathan Miller, chief digital officer of News Corp, which owns Hulu. ![]() |
